In Which Mr. Fix-it Does A Very Sensible Thing
In our house we like our food spicy--lots of garlic, cayenne, cumin--that type of thing. We also like black pepper. If you are the waiter at a restaurant where they don't trust you with your own pepper mill you WILL be standing there a long time.
About ten years ago, we had a salt and pepper set. I don't remember what it looked like, but I know it wasn't ceramic. It certainly didn't look like any of these because these are totally not how we roll at Casa Juggling Life (not that there's anything wrong with them!).
We had taken our usual step of putting the pepper in the salt shaker as it has more holes. Honestly though, every night we were shake, shake, shaking to get enough pepper on our food. One night, Mr. Fix-it stopped right in the middle of the shaking and got up from the table. He went out to the garage and he got out his Makita cordless drill and he drilled larger holes in the shaker top. My mom and I looked at each other in amazement. Never, ever in a million years would either of us have thought of doing that. It made us happy.
Today we sport a high output/low rotation pepper shaker!
In Other News . . .
I. Am. Done. For. The. Semester!
Can I get a Woop-Woop? I know I can from Mary Alice and Professor J (who found a video that says it far better than I could--a little Alice Cooper and the Muppets anyone?).
OMG people--I wanted to make sure the Woop-Woop was right so I googled the lyrics to the song. Not what I thought I was singing along to AT ALL! I'm assuming our radio station must have been playing the "clean lyrics." Either that or I really need my hearing checked.

Yay You! Done for the summer!
My kids have been singing School's out for Summer all week, mostly my 4 year old. I guess they are wishing to be done too.

Congratulations!
I still have a few more weeks to slog through before I'm done, as do my students. Also - I sincerely hope the wether in So Cal is better than what we're experiencing!

Congrats on being DONE for the semester. Enjoy the FREEEEEEEDOM.

Congrats on being done for semester! I can't wait to read your paper! Also: Pepper freak here as well! Eggs seem to take the most black coating!

The hotter the better. My husband doesn't think he's actually enjoying his food unless he has to wipe his brow multiple times during the course of a meal. He and his two adult sons actually compete to see who has the most tolerance. Sometimes the competition can take a while, but now I'm just going to go get them a Makita and be done with it in one round. Perfect! Congratulations for completing the semester!!

We are awash in standardized testing, so I know we are getting closer to an Alice Cooper - Muppet extravaganza.
In Texas, it was the TAKS, in my home state it is called the WASL, but here it is officially called SOL's. Hahahahaha.

Brian takes the cap off the pepper shakers in restaurants because the flakes are too big for the holes. Drives him nuts and the man can't live without his pepper. I pepper my meat before cooking it, and I use pepper in recipes that call for it, and I gotta have it on my eggs and my mac n cheese. otherwise I can live without it. Brian thinks I am insane.
KEEP BELIEVING

Funny about the drill - HA!! I have to have TONS of pepper on my salads and baked potatoes and such and often take the top off the pepper and just use the shaker that way!
Have a good day - see you - Kellan

Congrats on your big finish!
Those s/p shakers are pretty adorable. That's a great idea--I should do that since we switched to kosher salt and it NEVER pours out now...

That is so funny what your hubby did! My husband did the same thing to our pepper shaker several years ago! Love it now!
Hope you finished up your semester and still managed to survive. Have a good summer!

This post begs to ask the question, what size drill bit? My Mr. Fix-It now has a new addition to his honey-do list. And with a Makita too (one of the very best drills, says he, who uses his professionally).
Hooray for end of semester break!!! The ONE THING I miss about school is that unbeatable feeling of being DONE. At least for a spell. I don't ever feel quite so free and easy in my working life.

Posted by:Angela | May 16, 2008 at 10:42 PM
that's a pretty good idea about the pepper mill.
Just goes to show that common sense trumps expensive gadgetry every time.

I'm not done for 18 days (totally not counting), but I will still give you a Woop - in a clean way, of course...

YAY YOU!!!!!
Posted by:Marie | May 17, 2008 at 09:02 AM
Hey well done, you!
I am a Pepper Queen. I coat my food in pepper. I love to chew pepper corns. Doesn't make me very kissable I guess although I suppose it's a better habit than chewing garlic!
Posted by:Reluctant Blogger | May 17, 2008 at 02:59 PM
We love pepper and spicies too. But the kids...not so much :(
Dh is done for the semester too! Woo hoo!!!!!
Posted by:CC | May 17, 2008 at 04:56 PM
I'm a pepper person too...which sometimes frustrates my young sons!!
And I will 'see your cowboy s&p shakers' and raise you a set of pink flamingo ones...and the pepper one needs larger holes..can I send to Mr. Fixit? :-D
Posted by:debbie | May 17, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Congrats! That's fantastic news.
Posted by:JCK | May 18, 2008 at 02:24 AM
I meant ...the end of the semester. That's fantastic news. Although larger holes in the pepper shaker could be great news.
Posted by:JCK | May 18, 2008 at 02:25 AM
he's clever, and well-monikered.
and where do i get those shakers. i love them all. that's totally how i roll. except i'd lose the little plastic stoppers thingo-s on the bottom and end up stuffing a wad of tin foil in them to keep the salt and/or pepper in them.
Posted by:kate | May 18, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Yay.For.You! You're done with another semester! Yay.For.You!
And for Mr. Fix-It. Nice job.

I used to collect S&P shakers...no idea where they got to!
Posted by:Janet | May 20, 2008 at 08:33 AM
I love the pepper story. Genius.
I googled those lyrics too recently to learn how to spell woop or whoop or woot or whoot or whatever and was a little shocked as well!
Congrats on the end...
