Warning: If You're Over 25, You Don't Know Cool!
You know how small businesses sometimes put things out for sale at the place where they manufacture it? Mr. Fix-it works in the same business park as a company called SRH. They sell all the gear our teens wouldn't be caught dead in wear--sweatshirts, tees, hats; cool looking stuff. SRH stands for Supporting Radical Habits. Plus, as a bonus, the initials SRH are the same as the initials for the kids' high school. So, when they were closing out stuff, Mr. Fix-it thought "Score. The kids will love it if I buy a bunch of this totally rad clothing and bring it home as a surprise."
Ummm, not so much. MVP informed us that the more common interpretation of SRH is not Supporting Radical Habits; rather it is Stoners Reeking Havoc. Obviously, there is no way my kids are going to support the improper use of the word reeking when it should be wreaking. They aren't the offspring of the grammar and spelling police for nothing!
Okay, the actual reason they won't wear it is the whole stoners thing. I guess we're going to consider it money thrown away for a good cause.

I know some lovely bros who would love srh stuff :) gotta lovely kids from the 951/909

My first thought was also "that's not how you spell wreaking!" And I'm well known for making up my own grammer and spelling rules! LOL
At least their dad was thinking about them and that's got to count for something. :)

ugh. I object to this "sch" on the grounds that they are unoriginal. Every teen clothing company thinks they can take a trucker hat, make up some inscrutable acronym (preferably 'subversively' referring to drug use) and it will wind up on Ashton Kutcher's head in the next issue of US Weekly.
Nay, I say, nay.

I could see how stoners could reek though....you know, when they smell like weed and forget to bathe.
Posted by:Mary Alice | May 13, 2008 at 06:49 AM
Yeah - been there, done that, got the Visa card bill.
On the up side I guess it's a good thing they don't want to be associated with the stoners.

Gah! I hate those moments when you think you're doing something so cool, and in reality, you totally are NOT. ;) It's the thought that counts! :)

Very funny.
reeking.....who knows how to spell anymore???
Well, at least Dad tried!!!!

Oh I long ago gave up ever buying any clothes for my children. They would never wear the stuff I like. I let them choose their own stuff now - it's easier all round. Their father would never think to buy clothes for them not even if it were a real bargain, or going free. He doesn't see clothes - not sure where he thinks his came from!?
The local secondary school where I grew up was called Plumstead Manor School - they never just used the initials on their clothing!

It kinda reminds me of those t-shirts they had a while back with the Japanese logos? Come to find out they stood for 'stupid white girl' - - yeah, heh. Somewhere along the way we grew up and became dorks. Unsavvy, grammatically deficient, dorks. ;)

I'm with the kids. The lettering looks kind of GOTH.
Posted by:JCK | May 13, 2008 at 09:54 AM
I can see how stoners reek...
At least your kids knew what's what! Mine? Not so much. And I try, but I'm with Mr. Fix-it here.
I once had a "cool" t-shirt with a Cheshire cat grinning and a word written in (Japanese?) symbol. Some nice person on the city bus told me it said SHIT.

"Totally rad"? Now I know you and I belong to the same generation.
I myself have never been "cool" and wouldn't know it if a bag of cool hit me in the face.

Oh man. I'm old, too! You are funny.

I live for UrbanDictionary.com to stay on the hip side. Of course, "hip" is not the word to say but anyway...
You've done well raising children who will tell you stuff :)

Posted by:Little Miss Sunshine State | May 13, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Oh no... I just turned 25 on thursday.... does that mean I am totally not cool anymore!!!???
Posted by:Motherhood For Dummies | May 13, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Oh man. That is such a drag.... heheh.
Posted by:MereCat | May 13, 2008 at 01:58 PM
I'd go with the eBay/Craig's List /Goodwill/maybe the neighbors thing too. Too bad. It's sweet that Dad thinks of doing nice things for the kids, though.
Posted by:Jules | May 13, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Hilarious--I'm actually shocked that he bought stuff for the kids! My husband wouldn't think of doing it!

Excuse me? we invented Cool long time ago.the kids now a days just think they invented it. Us old fuddie duddies know better. That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Former English teacher here. Noticed the reeking/wreaking discrepancy as well as the fact that the "r" isn't in uppercase like the "S" and the "H". I'm picky that way.
Posted by:apathy lounge | May 13, 2008 at 06:26 PM
Still you have to be proud of these kids of yours. I so needed to read this twice at first, I thought my spelling was gone with my hearing. It just wreaks!
Posted by:David | May 13, 2008 at 07:11 PM
Your kids are very cool.
Posted by:Madge | May 13, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Freecycling is always a good idea. Last Christmas, specific instructions to the two older children was to create wishlist from Amazon. That list was sent to my mom and to me. We stuck to their list; they were happy and we were happy.
Dad earns bonus points for thinking of his kids!
Posted by:ms_teacher | May 13, 2008 at 08:14 PM
A shame these didn't work out - so cool they were the same initials as the school!
Hope you had a good day - Kellan

A for Effort for Mr. Fix-it. But then, what would I know? I'm 39?
Posted by:Manic Mommy | May 13, 2008 at 09:47 PM
hahaha. That is so funny. My parents STILL can't pick out clothes for me so I feel for your kids!
Posted by:HRH | May 13, 2008 at 09:50 PM
You know I am only 26 yet I am very different from the teens of 2008
Strange. Then I remember I have been out of highschool for 8 years.
Posted by:Angela | May 13, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Okay that is just funny.
Posted by:Jamie | May 14, 2008 at 01:02 AM
My boys are too young to know what stoners are and they would be all over that bounty! We shop at Tilly's for our SRH gear.
Posted by:Tootsie Farklepants | May 14, 2008 at 01:07 AM
@Mary Alice, stoners smell like bong water. Not that I would know anything about that.
Posted by:Tootsie Farklepants | May 14, 2008 at 01:10 AM
Or it could have something to do with Dad calling it rad...
