I have never been a history buff. I’m also not a fan of books that require me to refer to a family tree or a map. I had a vague idea that this “Red Queen” business might have something to do with The War of the Roses, but that’s about all the background knowledge I had going into the book.
I LOVED The Red Queen, Philippa Gregory’s latest historical fiction novel. Not entirely a surprise since I also loved The Other Boleyn Girl several years ago, but gratifying, nonetheless.
The thing (for me) about Philippa Gregory’s novels is that if you’re into the family tree and map stuff, great. If not, you are still getting an engrossing story and compelling characters. This book was a page-turner that I finished in a couple of days.
As a plus, I feel like a little historical knowledge may have seeped into my brain while I was reading.
As Publisher’s Weekly puts it on the book jacket, “Confident, colorful, convincing, and full of conflict, betrayal and political maneuvering . . .”
Are you a historical fiction fan or just a Philippa Gregory fan? Or, have you not read much historical fiction and want to give it a try? Leave me a comment and I’ll pick a winner next week.
Thanks to Stacy at Touchstone/Fireside for giving me the opportunity to do this review and giveaway.

I LOVE historical fiction. I have never read any of Phillipa Gregory's books.
Most of the historical fiction I have read and loved takes place in the 13th-17th centuries.
Some of my all-time favorites have been
Confessions Of A Pagan nun by Kate Horsley,
I,Mona Lisa by Jeanne Kalogridis and Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

I love historical fiction, too. I read the Other Boleyn Girl and couldn't put it down. Have you read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon? Pure fluffy joy!

I like historical fiction set in the U.K., since I spent some time there... haven't read any of these books though. (And I agree with Alesia - Outlander is some good fluffy stuff.)

I LOVE Philippa Gregory, but I haven't read this one yet.

I'm a fan of historical fiction. But I have not read much by Philippa Gregory. I read part of The Constant Princess and liked it. I should pick it back up when I go up to my in-laws and finish it.
So, yeah, I wouldn't mind getting a copy of The Red Queen.

I love historical fiction. With books like you describe here, I do have to refer to the family tree/map, but I blame that on my faulty memory.
I've not read Phillipa Gregory, but I'm willing to give her a reading.

I love both historical fiction and Phillipa Gregory. I've read all her books. One thing I've learned is not get the book on Kindle. They either skip the family tree and map or shrink it down so small you can't read it. Either way, you need the book to be able to follow who is who.

I've beeen considering getting this book for my upcoming trip home. And, if I finish it while I'm there, I can leave the book for my mother (who loves historical fiction) to read.

I love Phillipa Gregory. My niece got me hooked on her. It took me a while since I did not think I would like them due to the whole history thing. Fooled me.

I did like The Other Boleyn Girl, so I would be more then willing to read this one.

I didn't think I liked historical fiction until I read The Other Bolyn Girl and another book by Phillipa Gregory.

I enjoy historical fiction but had not read Philippa Gregory until my book club got me started with the Boleyn books. She certainly takes some historical liberties but writes a real page turner!

I'm a BIG Margaret George fan. She wrote "Mary Called Magdalene", "Mary, Queen of Scotland", and the "Memoirs of Cleopatra". I'll have to check Philipa Gregory out!

I am a fan of both but I should probably be kicked out of the Philippa Gregory fan club becausse I never read The Other Boleyn Girl!

I love historical fiction and would love to read this book. Haven't read any of her books yet.

I LOVED The Other Boleyn Girl. It got me really thinking about that time frame and all of that. I mean, it was while America was a nothing of an organized (by the modern sense of the word) country and all of those European countries were just so MUCH. I'm also a weird history buff and one of my fav t.v channels (even now that we don't have cable) is The History Channel.

I enjoy her books - I do love me some historical fiction! In fact, at present I am rereading the entire Patrick O'Brian series (think Master and Commander) and Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series (ok, not that historical, being set about 100 years ago in Egypt).

Huge historical fiction fan! I love Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. So good... A great mix of romance, history, and political intrigue from the times of the Jacobite rising to the American revolution.
Right now, I'm reading Jane Smiley's "The All True Travels and Adventures of Liddie Newton" An excellent novel about a woman who lives in the Kansas Territory in the late 1850's and how they deal with the idea of becoming a state in the midst of the abolitionist movement.

I am starting to get more into historical fiction. I've never read Philippa Gregory, but have been interested in reading some of her things - I just always forget about her when I'm surfing around on Amazon.
