My son was sure he wanted to go to Western State College of Colorado. He was absolutely, positively 100% sure it was the school for him. We looked, he loved, he wasn't really interested in any other school. He is totally overqualified, but that was okay because that's when they give you money. Anyway . . . overheard at the dinner table . . .
Big Red: I decided I'm not going to Western State.
Parental Units: WTF? Excuse us?!
Big Red: Well, Gunnison posts the second coldest winter temperatures in North America.
Parental Units: We figured you knew Colorado was colder than San Diego.
Big Red: Well, that's a little too cold. Plus, the student body is 70% male and I just don't think I'm good enough looking for those odds.
Parenal Units: ? ? ? Good thing we beat you into encouraged you to apply to some other schools.
Funny, he looks like an intelligent young man. But I guess he did do some serious science (temperature changes), geography (Oh! That's where Colorado is), and math (probability is especially difficult sometimes).
:)
You guys have amazing restraint; well done. Good luck, wherever the odds take him.

We had some neighbors who vacationed in Colorado every year (Estes Park) and then decided to move there. My husband, who used to be an archaeologist and lived there, warned them about how cold it gets. And windy. He told them that there's a huge difference between vacationing in a climate like that and living there. They paid him no heed. They lasted exactly one year before moving back. Your kid is smart.

Ummm yes. Smart kid. Smart tolerant parents! After living in some very different climates the Middle Child has decided she will be spending her adult life in Florida or Georgia. She loves that sultry heat and would be happy never to see ice or snow again.

Yes...it's cold in Colorado and it takes a special kind of person to live there...Oh! I'm from Colorado, by the way!! :-D Gunnison, is actually in one of the most beautiful parts of the state,but.... if you don't ski or like endless days of snow, you might be bored (I think that's a pre-req. for university there). On the other hand, there is a saying about the weather in Colorado....if you don't like it, wait 10 minutes 'cause it'll change!! Good luck finding a warmer place.....with better girl/boy percentages!!

When we informed our daughter we were moving to FL when she graduated from high school, she decided that's where she would go to college. We call it Flip-Flop U.
The first time someone asked her where she went to college she said "Heaven"
Shopping for college included multiple bikinis and beach towels.
And he would be definately be good looking enough. He looks just like our daughter's boyfriend, but with longer hair!

Can I just tell you that from my end, he couldn't be more charming. I like a man who calculates his odds. He's clever AND funny. That said, I realize it's always funnier when it's not your kid. But still...

OH oh oh - that is SO typical - but I have to say that I can kind of see his point about the winter weather (having gone to graduate school in Denver) and the whole 70% male thing. In fact, those would have been really good odds for me as a freshman- I might even have braved the weather!

OMG - this reminds me of how I picked MY college: had the cutest boys in the pamphlet/booklets they sent out... Sad, huh? Are those four gorgeous kids yours?! Wowie!
