Actual parent-child conversation.
MVP: My friends and I found a house for next year--it's a little more than what we talked about, but it's got high-speed Internet and cable included and a laundry room with a washer and dryer in the house.
Me: Don't I pay tuition for you to go to a college that has WiFi in the library? I'd rather have you studying than watching cable TV. And having you schlepp to the laundromat sounds like a character-building exercise to me.
5 days later.
MVP: We found another place. It's $100 per month cheaper per person.
Me: That's more like it.
You are a freaking rock star mom. You're my hero.

Sometimes you accomplish so much more by NOT using the word "no" - as you obviously have realised long time ago.
You rock!

I love it. Very smart move on both sides.

What? You aren't making him share a tiny dorm room with only a desk, small bed, and a closet, with a stranger? Now THAT is character building!

Sorority Girl is moving in August to an apartment that is $100 MORE per month but much closer to campus.
She can go make lunch at home and not spend as much on gas. After 3 years of emotionally unstable suitemates and fellow apartment dwellers, we decided she deserved to spend her last year living with 2 good friends.

That is a conversation you would hear at my house!

This brings back memories of helping to carry tons (and tons) of boxes up countless number of steps each time one of my kids moved in college! (every year)

Your tough love inspires me! Brilliantly played, Madam!

That's right!
Posted by: Jason | April 11, 2009 at 01:04 PM
That's right. Hold your ground! I bet the other parents are grateful too!
Note to MVP: high-speed Internet and cable? not a selling point with moms.
