Teaching your kids the dangers of alcohol can be easier than you think.
July 4th weekend we spent with my In Laws at their lake house on Lake Okeechobee. We always have a really nice time there, good food and great laughs. This particular weekend we were having a celebration with the folks across the canal from my In laws. These neighbors have a pool and are very social. Those folks invited other people that we did not know and we in turn had family members coming in for the day.
After a few hours of being at the neighbors we moseyed back to our place to just visit amongst our own. As we were leaving, a boat load of partiers were coming in…and you could hear them wayyyy down the canal as they approached. These other guests were really enjoying the holiday!
After a while back at our place, the kids all were hot and decided to ride across the canal and swim in the pool over at the party house. Fine, no biggie, they are all teenagers, great swimmers and we can SEE them from where we were.
When our kids got over there though, they noticed very quickly that most of the guests were by now intoxicated.
One big hint that tipped them off…this little incident right here:
My 15 yr old daughter had a band aid covering a problematic mole. The only band aid I could find was this:
So, she is wearing her bikini and the band aid is showing on her back/hip area.
A woman (can’t call her a lady) Shouted to my daughter in front of everyone there:
“Oh, look at your tattoo…is that a dog bone?…that is really cute!”
All the kids just stared in disbelief and decided right then and there, hot or not, this was not the party for them.
Lesson learned: Alcohol can make you seem pretty stupid, pretty quickly and no one wants to look stupid.
Ha, ha! That's great! Nothing's more fun than being the sober one(s) around a bunch of drunks, that's for sure!

Smart kids!

haha yes too true. I don't think it is the kind of lesson that lasts though sadly. I too watched many people behave idiotically when drunk and look complete prats but that didn't stop me doing those student years of getting drunk and dancing on tables. I think it is a rite of passage and something to chuckle at one day when you are too old to cope with the hangover. Just so long as you don't overdo it and vomit on the pavement or venture near to water (so dangerous to be drunk near water - makes me shudder). I am hoping that my children will have the same fun that I had without doing anything too embarrassing or dangerous.

I'm getting a little nervous as my oldest enters his senior year and prepares to head off to college. I hope he sees and believes without the need to join the Stupid. (It took a few episodes of puking and hangovers --one very bad-- for me to see the light.)

I imagine that lesson will be with your kids for quite some time.

oh, my suz is a funny gal :)
she never fails to make me laugh!! remind me that she needs a new first aid kit... perhaps hello kitty bandaids would make for better tattos than a dog bone!

That's a great inadvertent lesson given by the over-partied "lady." I've always been amazed by how embarrassingly stupid people act when they drink too much...

Absolutely. We won't tell the kids about the up side to drinking. That will be our little secret.

That is SO funny! A dog bone tattoo! You couldn't ask for a better "Don't Drink and Be Stupid" commercial!
